A-roll - Video material that is edited, often with a voiceover, into a finished package
As-live - An interview that is recorded but left unedited, as if it was a live interview
Audio dub - A voiceover that is laid over a finished production. Could be audio or video production
Beta SP - Broadcast quality tape format
B-roll - B-roll is supplemental or alternative footage intercut with the main shot in an interview or documentary
Cans - Headphones
Digi Beta - Broadcast quality tape format
Down the line - Type of interview where the interviewer is in a different location from the interviewee
Dub - A copy from the master tape. Could be audio or video
DVCam - Broadcast quality tape format
GFX - Graphics
Grab - Short, edited piece of interview, generally around 20"-30" duration
HD - High Definition: a digital television broadcasting system with higher resolution than traditional television systems
Library footage - sometimes known as stock footage, video material already shot
Live - Type of interview
Master tape - Finished version of an audio or video production
Mix - Two or more sound tracks mixed together
OB - Outside Broadcast: can be radio or television, sometimes called broadcasting on location
Package - Finished video or audio piece
Podcast - A series of audio files which are distributed over the internet using syndication feeds for playback on both portable mp3 players and computers
Pre-rec - Pre-recorded interview
Rushes - Raw, unedited material
SFX - Sound effects
Soundbite - A short interview clip. Also known as a grab, generally used for news. Approximately 20"-30" in length, depending on the broadcaster's style
Sound track - Any audio, can be natural sound or interview
Stock footage - Same as library footage. Pre-shot material
Tape deck - For feeding rushes into an edit suite
TX - Transmission
Videocast - term used for the online delivery of video on demand. Same as a podcast but with pictures. Also known as a vodcast or a video podcast
VNR - Video news release. Also known as an A-roll
Vodcast - A podcast with pictures. Also known as a videocast or video podcast
VT - Video tape
VT editor - Technician who cuts the video tape footage
Webcast - Like an outside broadcast, but is transmitted via the internet. Can be live or pre-recorded
Webchat - Generally a studio based chat between two or more spokespeople, often moderated by a presenter. Interested parties submit questions ahead of transmission. Can be live or pre-recorded. Webchats can also be text-only based, using a Messenger style conversation window.
